A few days ago, I read an opinion about why the economy is in such trouble. It’s all Ronald Reagan’s fault!
You see, the real estate bubble burst because of bad loans and the bad loans were made because lenders were under-regulated and Reagan pushed for deregulation.
Of course the article said nothing about the Savings and Loan fiasco occurring during - yep - the Reagan Administration. Of course, that was due to deregulation from the Carter Administration. So Ron shoulda known better… right?
That’s what I love. Finger pointing. As if I don’t get enough from my kids.
Now am I going to say that the Reagan Deregulation had nothing to do with today’s problems? Not on your life. Truth is: I don’t know. What I do know is it’s been 20 years since Ron was the Prez and it seems like the torch should have passed on by now.
I also know this was NOT a surprise to a lot of people. People who should have known better. People who ignored the warning signs when they should have been sounding the alarm.
However we are not a country of prudence. We are a country of crisis. We jump from one crisis to another - from the frying pan into the fire. Hear that whistle blowing? Ignore it.
And now we pay.
Newt Gingrich, on Sept 3rd or thereabouts, was asked about the Fan/Fred trouble. He said he served on a committee looking into Fannie Mae and was appalled with the exhorberant practices. He said we should not only NOT bail them out but we should prosecute those responsible and recover the billlions they squandered.
I agree with Newt in principle but I don’t know if we would ever recover a nickel. Somehow the money seems to vanish into thin air. However I DO think in light of what Newt had to say, the bailout is a total mistake.
Too bad no one will pick that hot potato up.
God bless,
Andy
